Bridge for Africa is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting self-sufficiency and the dignity of work in rural African communities. Bridge began in 2003 with the chance meeting of an African and an American in South Africa; they recognized that while the art emerging from Africa represents an extraordinary blend of tradition, vibrancy and the beauty of modern Africa, local markets are such that artisans are frequently not rewarded with a living wage for their work.

I began Colores del Pueblo in 1997 from the ashes of Pueblo to People. Pueblo to People had started in 1979 as a non-profit organization to assist Latin American artisans to find a market for their finely made crafts. Due to a combination of factors, they ceased to exist in 1997. I had worked with them for 3 1/2 years and had come to know and love many of the artisans and their families and thus, decided to carry on the mission. We started small, working with some of the cooperatives that didnt have other outlets for sales.

Welcome to Didi Bahini - a fair trade organization helping socially minded Nepalese artisans find markets in North America. We specifically target the high end boutique market with our wonderful high quality products. PLANTING THE SEED… The idea for this initiative was born in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, in 2005. I (Jane Gragtmans), Didi Bahinis founder, spent three years living in Nepal from 2003 - 2006, while accompanying my husband on his work posting, together with our two younger children. We found Nepal and its people captivating! We enjoyed our time there tremendously and wanted to find a way of giving back to the Nepalese and supporting them in their struggle for development.

Earth Friendly Coffee is a social justice initiative doing business as a fair trade coffee company. Our dream from Day One has encompassed far more than an American ‘for profit’ doing the ‘right thing’ in dealing with their Third World suppliers. "Fair Trading" is where we started. Earth Friendly sees ‘justice’ as allowing and empowering indigenous coffee farmers to offer the world a value added, roasted, finished product—rather than a fairly traded raw commodity.

Asante Network is currently assisting women´s groups in East Africa. The women who range in age from 20 - 60 are married and single mothers, widows, students, and grandmothers. These enterprising artisans all have similar goals. They want their children and grandchildren to have a better life! They know that education for their children is the roadmap out of poverty to a more prosperous future. The women enjoy working together and this gathering time yields many benefits. The primary benefit is that meeting in unison provides a "social" outlet. Collectively they learn new skills, critique each others work, solve common challenges, exchange ideas for new products and support the goals of the group.

At Awava, we believe in order to reach sustainable peace in Uganda and beyond, access to resources is essential. These resources include access to a reliable financial income, clean water, education and food. Our mission is not one of charity, but of economic empowerment, for you “give a woman a fish and you feed her for a day. Teach a woman to fish and you feed her for a lifetime.” In assisting Awava’s artisans with design and providing Western market access, we at Awava are not only providing a space in which marginalized Women in Uganda can sell their masterpieces, but ensuring that these products will sell. By ensuring the sale of these products at a fair price, Awava’s artisans will be able to gain access to precious resources, therefore empowering themselves through their skills.

Fair Trade Quilts & Crafts is a "social business" which adheres to "Fair Trade" principles established in November 2000 to support craft and weaving in the developing world. Every product we sell was created by artisans in a "Sweatshop Free" environment. We strive to preserve traditional methods of hand weaving while providing a steady & fair income to the artisans. You can read more about our work and our mission and principles below. As Fair Traders, we pay artisans at least 50 percent more than they are paid within their local market. Global Crafts was founded in 2002 by Kevin Ward and Renice Jones, who met as volunteer computing teachers in Kenya realized the capacity of the web to help individual artisans. After three years in Kenya they came to the USA and setup Global Crafts, initially as a small Fair Trade retail store. It soon became apparant that to sell in volume and change the lives of the artisans, the wholesale business would have to grow.

We seek out highly creative paper products from communities that are providing jobs to the most vulnerable of society. The banyan tree got its name when Europeans started trading with Indian merchants (who are called "banyan" in the Gujarati language) 400 years ago. The Indian traders would find shade under this sprawling tree, and the name of the tree became synonymous with the traders themselves. As global trade has evolved, we now live in an incredibly interconnected economy with over $12 TRILLION worth of goods circling the globe each year. But half the world (thats 3 billion people!) still lives on less than $2 a day. When you choose to purchase one of our handcrafted products from the developing world, you are making a statement that the poor should get to participate fully and benefit from global trade. But more than that, you are giving a mother a dignifying work option that enables her to support her family. You are empowering an orphan to rebuild the economy of a country ravaged by genocide and disease. In short, you are helping the world become what it ought to be, an interconnected global family. Thats our dream and thats what it means to buy paper with a purpose.

I started the Yellow Label Kids collection after leaving a corporate job to become a teacher, and then a mother. My son and many students inspired me to look for an alternative to mass-produced, commercial toys and clothing. I looked for items that would celebrate the beauty and simplicity of childhood. I was fortunate to connect with groups of artisans in different countries, mostly mothers themselves, who earn real living wages from the handcrafts they produce. By design, Yellow Label Kids products come with minimal packaging and many styles are made with organic bamboo yarn.

Welcome to zenDeluxe, our first retail website. In the early 90s, when zen zen, our wholesale company, was young, we used to tell people that we only used natural, ecologically sustainable materials and they usually had no idea what we were talking about. Thank goodness, terms like recycle, green, eco-friendly and carbon neutral are now becoming house hold words. That’s great news for the planet. As for us, we have been essentially green since 1992, and we stay that way by following these basic principals:

Bali. A place I couldnt conceive of visiting. In 1995 my mother, daughter and I went on two cruises on Holland America Line with its predominantly Indonesian crew. When I came home I mentioned to a friend that I had to see the country these young men came from. She knew a woman who took groups to Bali through a local university. There was room for a non-student in the upcoming group, so this person who was never going to need a passport, didnt much like to fly, and liked heat and humidity even less, found herself in a group of 18 strangers (another stretch) on the way to Bali. When we arrived I was "home." and I knew my life would be forever changed. Im now on my second passport, Ive logged more than half a million air-miles, and I can tolerate - but still dont like heat and humidity.

Sustainable Threads was born from our collective professional experience and personal interest in rural development, entrepreneurship and social justice. Among the various options, we chose to leverage our relationships in the development sector and start a fair trade wholesale enterprise. Our brief profiles are shared below. We currently work with over 10 artisan groups in India, with the goal of long term, deep partnerships. Our focus is on the people, not just the product. This model requires a significant investment in design and product development, factoring in the skill sets of each community.

Kelly Weinberger founded WorldFinds in 2000. She and her husband David Burns left their jobs in Chicago to spend 14 months traveling around the world. While in Asia, Kelly was struck by the talented artisans and concerned for their lack of income when tourism faded, and vowed to do something about it when she returned to the States. The remainder of the trip was spent learning about the plight of artisans and fair trade, and culminated in an all-important visit to Traid Aid, a fair trade company, in New Zealand.

The Blessing Basket Project® is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that believes the rural poor in developing countries are quite capable of pulling themselves out of poverty. We use a unique financial model which allows artisans to earn significantly higher than fair trade wages for their products for a given period of time. The artisan is free to steward that money however they wish. Most often they use the capital to create multiple small businesses. Those entrepreneurial endeavors result in several independent streams of income creating sustainable financial independence from our organization. We generate the Prosperity Wages® by selling their artisan products.

We three, Evelyn Johnson, Madeiria Myrieckes and Cindy Pardo, opened The Fair Trader in September 2007. This has been a most amazing journey. What began as one of those "why dont we?" moments became the first Fair Trade retail store in Chicago. We made a plan that embodied our vision, found Fair Trade suppliers, searched our Hyde Park neighborhood for a space that was just right, and rehabbed that space to become the colorful, bright retail store we had envisioned. The goods from around the world began to arrive, and we were in business.

Our Story...Trails to Bridges is an enterprise started after much prayer and discernment, and a leap of faith. It started with a request from my pastor to lead a new effort at church, focused on increasing our congregations "global awareness." At my job (at that time) in the financial services industry, I was starting a new project--to evaluate and select a career assessment tool that would help the companys employees better understand their strengths and interests, in hopes of better aligning them with appropriate roles. My own assessment results told me clearly, that God was calling me to take a new path...something that leveraged an eclectic mix of mission, international travel, sales, marketing, ministry and service. So I left an 18 year career in financial services to start Trails to Bridges. Six years have passed since then, or as my husband says, "since Sue jumped off a cliff." We have our challenges as all start up ventures do. But thanks to you weve grown from beginnings on the kitchen table to an office at home in the basement with inventory in EVERY room of the house and garage, even in the cars, to a new, small and cozy gallery and office.

Venture Imports is owned and operated by Jennie Nichols. She is a graduate of Calvin College, where she earned an undergraduate degree in Economics with a minor in Third World Development. Her studies nurtured her belief that where one is born oftentimes unfairly dictates their opportunities in life. This, in turn, fostered a desire to help balance the scales of that inequity. During a college trip to South Africa, she came to believe that a good way to help people in developing countries is to provide them a market to sell their goods, so, in 2001, she started Venture Imports with that goal in mind.

It started with our involvement in a Nepali orphanage called Mendies Haven.  We felt particularly connected with a group of six boys who had grown up in the orphanage and had reached the age where it was time to “graduate” and move out on their own.  Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world and with a 42% unemployment rate, we realized that it would be paramount to orphaning the boys again – to send them off at 18 without an opportunity to earn a living for themselves.  With the help of good friends, the boys selected some silver jewelry to send back to the States to “see if it would sell.”  I had a home party, practically sold out of the jewelry, and the seed of an idea was born.  What if the boys could become the in-country representatives for some sort of an import company that would sell things made by artisans in Nepal?

JA partners with indigenous artisan women in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala to produce customized, hand-embroided sweatshirts, polos, t-shirts, and tote-bags. We market those products as ethically produced alternative to the goods that student organizations and companies in the US already buy in large numbers. In doing so, we connect artisans with a much larger market than they could otherwise find for their products, and we give buyers in the US an opportunity to express ethical commitments through their purchases.

In 1979, Angelo Ponce was playing with his daughter, Dianita and saw the potential of combining the luxurious Alpaca fur and her love of teddy bears. Surprised to see that all of her teddy bears were made of synthetic fiber, Ponce was inspired to bring a favorite American tradition to a classic fiber of his Latin roots by handcrafting bears made from Alpaca. A studied sculptor, he created the first bear as a soft sculpture. “Junior” was born from his artistic eye and love for his daughter.

From the way a bracelet moves on the wrist to the way the eye travels to a piece of jewelry, Lilybead is about accentuating your essence. I love how a flower chip bracelet adds grace to a hand gesture or how the geometric pattern and sparkling crystals of a fiesta bracelet draw every eye in the room as a woman walks by. I believe that accessories are best when their subtle drama accentuates the wearer’s own unique beauty.

Lotus Jayne began one sticky August afternoon in the year 2000 in Cambodia. A tiny little girl, my new daughter, sat on my lap staring numbly through the rain-splattered windshield as we pulled away from the AOA orphanage and all she knew. Ahead, over the muddy and rutted road, lay the Phnom Penh airport and her new life in the USA. It was one of those moments in life that one remembers forever. Here were my husband and I bringing a precious gift out of this devastated country. I realized then that we had an obligation to give back to Cambodia; her people had suffered so much, and so recently. At that time I had no idea what form giving back would take, but I did know that Jayne, like millions of children all over the world in war-torn countries, was orphaned through no fault of her own.

Lucia’s Imports L.L.C established in 2005, works under Fair Trade guidelines and partner with Guatemalan families, artisans groups and cooperatives to produce and develop a wholesale market for their quality designed accessories and handicrafts. Working directly with the Guatemalan artisan improves their economic well being and allows them to earn a living wage. Around the world, most artisans have little opportunity or experience to market their products. We work side by side with the artisans to design products that are not only rich in tradition but fashionable, modern and functional. Our hand beaded glass jewelry is made by artisan groups on Lake Atitlan utilizing their traditional weaving skills and modern design rich in beauty and color. Most recently, we are working with artisans to preserve the ancient tradition of Mayan weaving and the new tradition of Recycling, Reusing and Renewing. Our eco-friendly purses, coin bags and accessories combine ;vintage embroidery and weavings from the Mayan women’s hupiles and cortes (traditional poncho style blouses and skirts made by the Mayan women. See history adjacent page) with modern fashion.

We first discovered the women’s co-op at the World Social Forum, an international conference of over 100,000 people representing the grassroots community from all over South East Asia and the World. At the time, the co-op was creating childrens toys but was interested into moving more into fashion. We were struck by the gorgeous hand block printed fabrics and detailed embroidery. As supporters of fair trade we had often found it difficult to find fashionable fair trade clothes in the North American market.

For more than three thousand years, working on the backstrap loom, Mayan women have woven their own and their families’ clothes, as well as produced items for sale. The ancient backstrap loom is very simple, made up of several sticks and a leather or sisal strap that wraps around the woman’s body. It requires painstaking dedication and skill. With some complex patterns even expert weavers can weave only about one inch of cloth per hour.

In 1993, I traveled to Spain as an exchange student. It was my first trip outside the country. Since that time, I have refused to stop talking, traveling, and dreaming in Spanish. In fact, the very heart and soul of my business takes root in my passion for Latin American culture. It was my study of Incan shamanism under the guidance of Ruben Orellana and Don Theo Paredes, Ph.D. that led me to Peru in 2004. There, in the homeland of Pachacuti (pah-cha-coo-tee), the idea of pachacutec, “a change for the better,” began to germinate.

Working primarily in Nicaragua, we have discovered world class pottery, hand-forged iron décor, beautiful wooden bowls, and gourmet coffee produced by talented individuals, each with one thing in common: lack of access to the markets they need to grow, succeed, support their families, and lift their communities out of poverty. Our commitment to social responsibility drives us to discover producers that have been left behind by traditional channels and bridge them to you, creating a deep connection in relationship and trade, and empowering them to find hope for a better tomorrow.

MarketPlace: Handwork of India is an innovative fair trade, not-for-profit organization which combines the experience of running a business with a variety of support programs designed to effect real, meaningful, and lasting change in the lives of low-income women in India. We work with 480 artisans who are organized into 14 independent co-operatives which produce high-quality womens apparel and home decor. Being in charge of their own businesses, the women learn valuable skills and are able to earn a living and support their families. In addition, programs offer educational and enrichment opportunities designed to help the artisans overcome personal, cultural and financial obstacles. Empowered with independence and self-confidence, these women become agents of change. And they find the courage, with the support of their cooperative members, to fight for what they believe in. Asserting themselves as decision-makers in their families, they have kept their children in school and out of early marriages, thus ensuring them a better future. They have also become social activists, using the skills they have learned in the workplace to improve conditions in their communities. In MarketPlaces comprehensive and creative organization, economic development is only the first step for these brave and resourceful women.

Over 30,000 artisans a year participate in our programs. We do not work alone. In addition to partnering with businesses and organizations to implement our services and ensure sustainability for artisans, we rely on the generous support of a range of public and private sector partners and many individuals for funding.
